A Job Fair is the first place where a company representative will be seeing you, the perspective job candidate. And yes, first impressions do make a difference.

Some general do's:

  • Have plenty of resumes - If you have not started on yours, please check out the Resume Tips section. One of the most common errors, is mispelled words or grammatical mistakes. Proofread, proofread, proofread!! Have a friend review your resume or even better, stop by the Student Employment Office during Walk-In Hours [Tuesday/Thursday 2pm-4pm and Wednesday 8am-10am].
  • Make sure to dress professionally. Although, many representatives may be dressed casually wearing their company's logo, it is not appropriate for a someone searching for a job to be as casual. You want to make sure that you get to that next level - and unless you normallly wear business attire to school, what you normally wear will not cut it.

Which of these students do you think an employer will remember for being ready to work???

Make sure to be well groomed!

  • Review the list of employers. Make to to research the company by visiting their website or any company literature.
  • Have a 30 second skit ready to explain your background and general qualifications for the position they are recruiting for.
  • Ask what the next step is after giving your resume.

General Do NOTs:

  • This is not an interview. Do not have a lengthy speach ready. In general, you will only have 1-2 minutes at the maximum.
  • Do not talk on your cell phone while at a job fair! In fact, turn it off before you enter the room where the company representatives are.
  • Do not ask personal questions about the recruiter.
  • Do not ask what the salary is!!
